Diffraction

Diffraction: change of direction of a wave caused by the presence of an object or an inhomogeneity in the medium of propagation; the change of direction depends on the size of the object, the distances in the lattice, and the incident wavelength. Source: Gemological Dictionary (M. Superchi).
