Halite: a mineral also known as rock salt. Chemically, it is sodium chloride with the formula NaCl. It ranges from transparent to translucent, with a vitreous luster and colors varying from white and gray to colorless, brown, red, and black. It crystallizes in the Cubic System and typically forms cubic crystals, but can also occur in coarse- and fine-grained aggregates. It is found in evaporite deposits.
