Selective Light Absorption

Selective Light Absorption: phenomenon according to which some of the wavelengths of the white light, as they penetrate a gem and propagate in it, are absorbed by the stone itself, with the transmission and emergence of the surviving wavelengths. The resultant will be either the prevailing wavelength or the combination of the surviving wavelengths. This will determine the color or tint of the gem.
