Serpentine: a mineral with the chemical formula Mg6[(OH)8 Si4O10]. It ranges from translucent to opaque, with a luster that can be waxy, greasy, silky, or dull, and colors ranging from green to gray, white, and yellow. It crystallizes in the Monoclinic System and does not occur as distinct crystals but rather as finely granular or microcrystalline aggregates. It is found in fractures or veins within Serpentine rocks and Marbles. Based on its structure, the varieties Chrysotile and Antigorite are distinguished.
