Brendan M. Laurs (MS, GG, FGA) is editor-in-chief of The Journal of Gemmology published by Gem-A, and is based in southern California, USA. From 1997 to 2012 he was editor of Gems & Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, California.

He is a gemologist and geologist specializing in the formation of colored gemstone deposits (particularly in granitic pegmatites), and has visited numerous gem mining areas in Africa, Asia, Brazil, and the USA.
