Isabella Pignatelli is Associate Professor at Université de Lorraine (Nancy, France), Department of Geosciences. She works on terrestrial and extraterrestrial minerals with a multi-scale approach that allows her to understand the link between the composition and structure of minerals and their conditions of formation and/or alteration in a wide variety of contexts ranging from cosmology to biomineralogy.

Her interest in gemstones dates back to her Bachelor's thesis and has been realized over the years with several studies of rare specimens, such as “trapiche” minerals, Colombian “scepter” and “vase” emeralds, Greenland rubies with macrosteps, etc.

Since 2014, she has been a member of the Commission on Inorganic and Mineral Structures (CIMS) of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), and since 2023 she has become chair of the Special Interest group on mineral and inorganic crystallography (SIG 05) of the European Crystallography Association (ECA).
