Lower Mantle

Lower Mantle: its lower boundary is defined by the Gutenberg-Wiechert discontinuity, at approximately 2,900 km depth, which separates it from the Core. This layer is believed to contain mostly dense ferric oxides, denser than the overlying materials, with density gradually increasing until the transition to the Core.
