Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary Rocks: rocks formed at very low temperatures and pressures near the Earth’s surface, and are constantly exposed to weathering agents such as heat, rain, wind, and water. These rocks originate from the deposition of various materials, including animal or plant remains, products of chemical or mechanical breakdown of preexisting rocks, or deposits of salts. They are classified into:

  1. Chemical Origin Rocks: formed by the precipitation of mineral salts circulating in solution. Examples include Alabasters and Travertines.
  2. Organogenic Rocks: formed from the sedimentation of inorganic parts (shells, skeletons) of organisms such as Corals and foraminifera. An example is Dolomite.
  3. Clastic Rocks: resulting from the cementation of residual fragments of preexisting rocks. Examples include Conglomerates and Sandstones.
