We sadly announce the news of the passing of Dr. Carlo Cumo, one of the landmarks of analytical gemology in Italy and a fruitful contributor to the Rivista Italiana di Gemmologia – Italian Gemological Review (IGR).
Carlo Cumo, a chemistry graduate, was for years co-owner with E. Leone of one of the most reputable European gemmological laboratories in Valenza, in the province of Alessandria. He later continued the profession in an independent laboratory. He has always devoted constant effort as much in research as in the dissemination of gemmology.
A profound supporter of the importance of updating research in gemology, Cumo has authored texts that have been solid foundations for all those who have embarked on the path of studying precious gems. In 1985 he published, with E. Leone, the text “Gemme naturali e artificiali” (“Natural and Artificial Gemstones”), while in 1996 he authored – together with Claude Mazloum – the volume “Gemme e gioielli. Materiali e artisti” also translated into English (“Jewelry gem by gem. Masters and materials”), French (“Les gemmes des joyaux. Maîtres et materiaux”) and German (“Edelsteine und Juwelen. Materialien und Meister”).
In recent years, after releasing articles for several international journals, he decided to share his knowledge and his desire for scientific dissemination with our gemology magazine. He immediately became a valuable contributor and a friend to the editorial staff and to all readers. On our pages we have had the honor of hosting articles such as “From the analyst’s notebook. An investigation on a red faceted stone”, “From the analyst’s notebook. Biron synthetic emerald and its identification”, “Historical notes on the Biron synthetic pink beryl and its early popularity”, “The Use of Hydrofluoric Acid in the Production of Synthetic Biron Emeralds and the Correct Terminology for Synthetic Gemstones”.
The entire editorial staff extends its sympathy to Carlo’s family, friends, students and collaborators.
