On September 19 and 20, 2026, Helsinki hosted the meeting of The Gemmologists Association of Finland, a major event dedicated to gemology and the exchange of knowledge among industry professionals and enthusiasts.
Association president Petteri Sten acted as host, welcoming participants with great professionalism and warmth. Finland has proven to be particularly dynamic in the gemological world for some time, and this event certainly confirms it.
The meeting featured Professor Clemens Schwarzinger and Bruno Martinez as speakers. Professor Schwarzinger addressed the topic of colored gemstones, focusing specifically on tourmalines, tanzanites, and garnets, and delving into their characteristics and analysis criteria.

Bruno Martinez, meanwhile, dedicated his presentation to photomicrography techniques applied to gemology, illustrating methodologies, instruments, and practical tips useful both for observing inclusions and for the professional documentation of gemstones.
The theoretical sessions were followed by practical workshops, where participants could directly apply what they had learned. The activities covered colored gemstone analysis and gemological photomicrography techniques, creating an effective link between theory, observation, and practice.
The event also featured a fun, competitive segment: a contest focused on gemstone identification and general gemological knowledge. This year’s winner was Mikko Åström, who stood out across the various challenges presented.
A particularly moving highlight was the diploma presentation ceremony for the Association’s new gemologists, a meaningful moment that celebrated their educational journey and dedication, once again underscoring the importance of shared knowledge within the gemological community.
The beautiful setting of Helsinki also made these days particularly enjoyable. The mild weather allowed attendees to fully experience the city and appreciate some of its signature traditions, such as the fantastic experience of a Finnish sauna followed by a dip in the sea: a unique and evocative moment that added an extra special touch to the event.
