The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has acquired 100% of American Gemological Laboratories (AGL), the U.S. leader in colored gemstone analysis, for $13.2 million USD ($9 million at closing + $4.2 million post-closing). The transaction was approved by the IGI Board on January 31, 2026, and closed in Q1 2026.
Less known in Europe but highly active overseas, AGL — founded in 1977 — is regarded by the North American market as the most credible laboratory for colored stones and a pioneer in geographic origin reporting.
Revenue grew 24% year-over-year (from $3.1 million to $3.85 million USD in 2024), confirming that the U.S. market recognizes the value of scientifically rigorous reports. IGI highlighted the acquisition’s operational efficiency and high prestige.
Christopher Smith, President and Chief Gemologist of AGL since 2016, will continue leading the laboratory, which will operate independently from its New York headquarters (580 Fifth Avenue) while retaining its brand.
