Element Six (E6) and Orbray have announced a strategic collaboration to deliver the world’s highest quality wafer-scale single crystal (SC) synthetic diamond. Both companies are world leaders in high-performing advanced materials. Element Six is a leading supplier of high-quality synthetic diamonds, while Orbray is a leading manufacturer of high-performance materials. This partnership is designed to meet the demands of cutting-edge industrial applications in telecommunications, defence, and artificial intelligence (AI), which increasingly require greater power and energy efficiency.
The exceptional properties of synthetic diamond, including high thermal conductivity and high breakdown field, provide a rationale for establishing SC diamond as the go-to material platform for future technologies. Element Six, a De Beers Group company and a pioneer in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) for large-area, uniform polycrystalline diamond growth, has recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility in Gresham, Oregon, USA for the sustainable production of high-quality single crystal diamond products.
Orbray, which has already achieved world-leading achievements in the field of synthetic diamond and sapphire growing technology, has developed a unique heteroepitaxial process for the growth of SC diamond on sapphire substrates. This process has yielded significant results, with diameters reaching up to 55 mm. The combination of Orbray’s innovative approach with E6’s large area deposition system and expertise in high-purity SC diamond production will provide a reliable supply of high-quality SC diamond for key applications such as 6G wireless components, advanced power electronics, thermal management, and quantum devices.
Siobhán Duffy, CEO of Element Six, stated: «This strategic collaboration will allow us to combine our core competencies to develop the world’s highest quality wafer-scale single crystal synthetic diamond».
