In recent weeks, Almazy Anabara, a subsidiary of Russia’s ALROSA Group, discovered a 262.5 carat rough diamond at the Ebelyakh mine in the Anabarsky district of the Arctic region of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). This remarkable find adds to the many achievements of this site, which is renowned for the quality of its diamonds. The stone, which is transparent with slight graphite and sulfide inclusions, is currently undergoing detailed analysis to determine its morphological characteristics.
Ebelyakh is known for its large diamonds and rare colored gemstones. In the summer of 2017, three fancy diamonds were found in just one month: a brilliant yellow, a pink, and a pink-violet stone. The pink diamond, weighing 27.85 carats and exceptionally pure, was the largest pink diamond ever found in Russia and was recognized as the best find of the year by The National Jeweler. The discovery of a 390.7 carat diamond, the largest diamond found in Russia in the past decade, also made headlines in 2023.
ALROSA CEO Pavel Marinychev highlighted the significance of this new discovery, stating:
«The Ebelyakh alluvial deposit is famous for its exceptionally rare colored and large diamonds that have gained worldwide fame. In 2017, the most expensive diamond in the history of Russia was mined here — a 27.85-carat, pure pink diamond, from which the ‘Spirit of the Rose’ was subsequently cut. The discovery of another record-breaking diamond at the same deposit in less than a year (from the recovery of the 390.7-carat stone) is a rare occurrence and, undoubtedly, a great success for the Russian diamond-mining industry».
