The gemological season starts again with the first live event after the Covid-19 pandemic. From July 22 to 23, 2021 in the southern Italian city of Bari the 3rd National Conference Diamond and Colored Stones – Genesis, provenance and market implications, organized by the Department of Earth and Geoenvironmental Sciences of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”, will take place.
Restarting also means getting back to talking live on major gemmological themes, encouraging contacts between the academic and research world and the world of trade and the industry as a whole. This is the spirit of this gemmological event, involving researchers, gemmologists, traders and gem lovers.
The extensive program, rich and varied, will feature a series of leading national and international speakers, who will alternately introduce their work to the audience during the two day long conference. In order of appearance the following participants will intervene: Gaston Giuliani (CRPG – France); Giovanni B. Andreozzi (UNIROMA1); Diego Gatta (UNIMI); Annalisa Martucci, Costanza Bonadiman, Nicola Precisvalle, Celestino Angeli (UNIFE); Michele Macrì (UNIROMA1); Nicola Precisvalle, Annalisa Martucci and Costanza Bonadiman (UNIFE); Giovanna Agrosì and Gioacchino Tempesta (UNIBA); Alessia Coccato, Maria Cristina Caggiani, Germana Barone, Danilo Bersani, Ugo Longobardo, Salvo Salini and Paolo Mazzoleni (UNICT); Valentina Gagliardi (IGI Istituto Gemmologico Italiano); Ferdinando Bosi (UNIROMA1); Giuseppe Elettivo; Marco Torelli (MASTERSTONE); Manuela Rossi, Alessandro Vergara, Roberta Biondi, Rosanna Rizzi (UNINA), Francesco Sequino (IGI International Gemological Institute; Istituto Gemmologico Gem-Tech); Raffaella Navone (R.A.G.); Fabrizio Nestola (UNIPD); Loredana Prosperi (IGI Istituto Gemmologico Italiano); Giancarlo Della Ventura (UNIROMA3); Alberto Scarani (MAGILABS); Maria Cristina Caggiani (UNICT); Rocco Gay (ICA).
IGR – Rivista Italiana di Gemmologia (Italian Gemological Review) is the Media Partner of the event and will provide detailed coverage of the research and scientific papers presented in the coming weeks. The main topics to be treated include useful case studies highlighting the contribution of scientific methods to gemology as well as the recent development of non-invasive and non-destructive techniques for the study of items and materials of gemological interest. The Conference is part of a long-standing series of events, starting with the first CIGES (Convegno Italiano di Gemmologia Scientifica) organised, respectively, in Rome in 2010, Bari in 2011, Florence in 2012 and Naples in 2013, up to the first two editions of the Conferenza Nazionale Diamante e Gemme di Colore organised in Catania in 2016 and 2019.
The event is also associated with the Video Contest “Gemmology in 3 minutes” organised by the Accademia Pugliese delle Scienze. In order to take part in the contest, the participants have to submit a max. 3-minute video in which they describe Gemmology in a scientifically accurate way but directed to the widest possible audience, being careful to use their own material, not subject to copyright (thus avoiding animations, sounds, music and videos taken from the web). The winner will be selected during the Conference and will be awarded a prize of 500 euros as well as a certificate of merit.
The Conference will take place at the Department of Earth and Geoenvironmental Sciences of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro” in via Edoardo Orabona 4 from 8 a.m. on 22 July 2021. Participation is free of charge for those who register on the website by 1 July 2021. Beyond that date participation will be subject to 50 euro contribution fee. On the dedicated page, conventions for overnight stays in the city of Bari during the event are also available to discover the beauties of the Apulian city.
The event has been realized thanks to the contribution of the Main Partners (University of Bari “Aldo Moro”; Fondazione Puglia; Marwan Technology; Masterstones; MAGILABS; Istituto Gemmologico Gem-Tech) and with the Institutional Patronage of the University of Bari “Aldo Moro”; University of Catania; SIMP – Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology; AIC – Italian Association of Crystallography; Accademia Pugliese delle Scienze of Bari; GNM – National Group of Mineralogy; G.A.Be.C.; Ordine dei Geologi della Puglia; IGI – Istituto Gemmologico Italiano; Confcommercio; Federpreziosi; Camera di Commercio di Bari; ASSOORO.
