Last November 9, 2022, Sotheby’s held the “Magnificent Jewels” auction in Geneva, where among the top items some renowned De Beers diamonds were introduced.
The De Beers Exceptional Blue Collection consists of eight blue diamonds. The latter were the buzzwords from the moment De Beers announced they were being mined in South Africa.
Sotheby’s Jewels Americas earlier stated in regard to the collection that «The De Beers Exceptional Blues are a true testament of our world’s most extraordinary treasures and what is yet to be discovered».
The diamonds were purchased by De Beers and then hand cut by the experts at Diacore’, known for their meticulous care in Diamond cutting.
Despite the fact that the entire collection, valued at a total of $70 million, was said to be the star of the auction, one of the very rare and mesmerizing blue diamonds did not find a buyer.
According to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF), no bids matched the estimated value of the diamond, which ranges between $11 and $15 million.
The unfortunate blue diamond was described by Sotheby’s as an exceptional stone due to its antique cushion and brilliant cut, weighing 5.53 carats.
Now this superb diamond will go through Sotheby’s 2023 auctions to be held in Paris or Geneva.
