Gemfields Marks 50th Emerald Auction from Zambia’s Kagem Mine

In November 2024, Gemfields celebrated a significant milestone with its 50th auction of rough emeralds from the Kagem mine in Zambia, reaffirming its pivotal role in the colored gemstone market. Introduced in 2009, Gemfields’ auction system revolutionized the industry by providing a structured sales platform in attempt to enhance transparency as well as greater stability to the market.

Zambian emeralds, renowned for their characteristic green hue with bluish undertones and at times exceptional clarity, have gained increasing global recognition — thanks in part to the innovative auction model. Since the inaugural auction, which featured 1.36 million carats of emeralds, Gemfields has surpassed $1 billion in total revenue as of 2024, underscoring the growing appreciation for these gems.

A key driver of this success has been the meticulous sorting of auction lots based on parameters such as color, size, shape, and specific characteristics, ensuring a tailored approach to market demand. Over time, Gemfields has introduced significant enhancements, including electronic bidding systems and extended viewing periods, making the auction process more flexible and responsive to an evolving industry.

Beyond strengthening Zambian emeralds’ position in the international market, the auction system resulted in a tangible impact on the local community. It has tried to contribute to skilled job creation, to support educational initiatives, and to promote environmental conservation efforts.

Thanks to these advancements, Zambian emeralds have emerged as strong contenders to their famed Colombian counterparts — not only for their intrinsic quality but also for the transparency and traceability ensured by a sales system that champions responsible sourcing.
