The fascination of emeralds in Asia: the webinar between “Myth and Reality” by L’École, School of Jewelry Arts of Shanghai

From West to East, the emerald trade has created strong commercial and cultural ties. In European representations, the emerald was a gemstone associated with the Orient. For the Chinese, on the other hand, the emerald was a gem from the West, until the official discovery of emerald deposits in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and, finally, China between the 20th and 21st centuries.

All this and more will be discussed during the online webinar “Emeralds in Asia, from Myth to Reality”, organized by L’École, School of Jewelry Arts of Shanghai, China campus, supported by Van Cleef & Arpels.

The one-hour webinar will feature speeches by Jing Yu, lecturer at L’École, School of Jewelry Arts, and He Bei, art historian and lecturer at the same school. Both will guide participants through the ancient trade routes and legends associated with these precious gems.

The webinar topic will also include the use of emeralds in Asian art and jewellery, revealing how these stones have been incorporated into cultural artefacts and artistic expressions. Participants will receive a detailed bibliography and have the opportunity to interact with the speakers during a question-and-answer session.

The conference will be hosted on Zoom on Friday 28th June 2024 at two different times: at 3am (Paris time) in Mandarin Chinese with simultaneous translation into English; at 1pm (Paris time) in Mandarin Chinese with simultaneous translation into English, French, Japanese and Cantonese. The times have been chosen to ensure adequate global participation and once the conference is over, participants will be able to watch them at their leisure on YouTube.
