Diamond Theft Worth US$ 670,000. Employees in Mumbai Face Up to 7 Years for Breach of Employer’s Trust

Two employees in Mumbai were arrested on October 30, 2023, on suspicion of stealing diamonds with a total value of US$ 670,000 from the premises of JB & Brothers Pvt Ltd, situated within the Bharat Diamond Bourse.

As per the Indian authorities, these two employees, tasked with delivering diamonds of various qualities to clients, had clandestinely retained some gemstones between April and October, manipulating the company’s records and documentation in the process. Later, the stolen stones were resold with the assistance of a former colleague.

Article 408 of this code pertains to the offense of “criminal breach of trust by someone employed” addressing situations in which an employee or worker, entrusted in any capacity with property or its management, may face the prospect of imprisonment for up to 7 years, in addition to fines.
