In the latest issue of Gemmology Today, Egor Gavrilenko and the first gemstone cutting course in Ethiopia

Gemmology Today, the magazine published by the World Gem Foundation, has recently released the second of four publications for 2024.

In the first sixteen pages, you can admire the works of Bangkok-based photographer Arjuna Irsutti, born in Vicenza, Italy, who was introduced to the world of gemstones by his father Silvio, a renowned gem trader.

Irsutti, who was the cover photographer for issue 5 of the Italian Gemological Review (IGR), offers us a showcase of spinels, tourmalines, tanzanites, and corundums with unique colors and cuts.

In the section “Gimme gimme – Investing in Africa (Part two)”, the second part of an in-depth look at strategies to attract foreign investment in the African gemstone sector, author Geoff Dominy focuses on Mozambique, a country known for its rubies. It examines how Mozambique is trying to leverage this precious natural asset to stimulate the local economy and attract international investors.

Nina Zolotukhina, a gemologist from MSU and a collector of minerals and gemstones, in her article “Moon rock. Underground behind the clouds” talks about moonstones and sunstones, their physical and chemical characteristics, and all the phenomena associated with them.

Browsing through this issue, we also find an interview with Egor Gavrilenko, former director of IGE (Institute of Gemology of Spain), geologist, and expert gemologist with 30 years of experience, dedicated to his passion for gemstone cutting. Gavrilenko also taught the first gemstone cutting course organized in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), an experience described in the article “Learning curve. Can you cut it?”. Gavrilenko delves into the challenges and satisfactions that come from teaching this complex technique, offering valuable advice to those who wish to pursue this career.

These and all other articles are available for free download on the Gemmology Today website.
