In Memoriam: Professor Henry A. Hänni (1945–2025)

Professor Henry A. Hänni, former Director of the Swiss Gemmological Institute SSEF, passed away peacefully at his home in Basel on January 9, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Professor Hänni devoted over four decades to advancing gemmology, becoming a global leader in the field. Beginning as a technical assistant at the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Basel, he pursued his passion for minerals, earning a PhD in 1980 with a focus on beryl from the Swiss Alps.

In 1990, Professor Hänni became Director of SSEF, where he played a pivotal role in its rise as a leader in gemmological research and certification. His work on pearls, coloured gemstones, and treatment detection revolutionized the field, with his innovations in origin determination now integral to modern gemmology.

Even after retiring in 2009, Professor Hänni continued to inspire students and professionals as a Professor of Gemmology at the University of Basel, a role he held since 1996. Known for his engaging teaching and enthusiasm, he mentored countless individuals, sharing his expertise and passion for gemstones.
