Rome mourns the loss of Maurizio Martini, a key figure in the field of gemology and the appraisal of stones and jewelry.
A geologist by training, he worked for about thirty years in the laboratory of the Monte di Pietà in Rome, distinguishing himself through his expertise, passion, and integrity. After retiring, he continued his work as a freelance professional, remaining a point of reference for many young people and colleagues.
Maurizio was not only an exemplary professional: he was, as those who knew him well wrote, “a true Roman”, in the most authentic and profound sense of the term. Witty, brilliant, straightforward, with an ever-lively gaze and an inexhaustible desire to tell stories — and to teach.
His friend and student Alberto Scarani remembers him with touching words, joined in remembrance also by the editorial staff of IGR Magazine:
«My first mentor has gone. Maurizio Martini introduced me to gemology, pushed me in the right direction, and introduced me to Luigi Costantini, my mentor. He was, first and foremost, a true Roman. I’ve never met anyone else who embodied all, and I mean, all, the canons for which the inhabitants of the Eternal City have always been famous, for better or worse. I appreciated his jovial and light-hearted nature. I laughed at his countless jokes and quip. There are people who come into our lives at a precise moment, almost by some astral conjunction, and cause a sharp turning point in our journey. It’s not always something intentional or conscious; it just happens. And when it does, it creates an indelible memory, a bridge between who we were before and who we became after.
That’s what happened with Maurizio. He gave me a glimpse, even if just through a peephole, of what I could become in a field I had never even considered before».
