A New University Program in Scientific Gemology: The Master’s Degree of Pavia Is Born

Starting from the 2025/26 academic year, the University of Pavia will launch the First-Level University Master’s Program in Advanced Scientific Gemology: Analysis, Ethics & Innovation (ASG) — a completely new initiative in Italy and one of great cultural significance.

For the first time, our country will have a genuine university-level school of applied gemology, joining international institutions such as Nantes. The program combines core scientific subjects (mineralogy, crystallography, geochemistry) with advanced modules in spectroscopic and analytical diagnostics, giving ample space to laboratories and internships. The curriculum is further enriched by courses in ethics, communication, and management — essential tools for working in a constantly evolving global sector.

A distinctive feature of the Master’s program is its commitment to equal opportunities and inclusion: no previous gemological qualifications are required, and admission is open to graduates from various academic backgrounds. To support candidates with established experience, a 40% reduction in tuition fees and the recognition of 30 ECTS credits are granted to those who hold a Gemologist Diploma issued by internationally accredited institutions (FEEG, IGI International Gemological Institute, HRD – Hoge Raad voor Diamant) and other applicants holding equivalent qualifications.

At the end of the program, students will obtain a double certification: the university title and, if not already acquired, the IGI Gemologist Diploma (Istituto Gemmologico Italiano).

Among the lecturers are leading scholars such as Matteo Alvaro (Scientific Coordinator), Loredana Prosperi and Ilaria Adamo (Istituto Gemmologico Italiano), Ferdinando Bosi, Giovanni B. Andreozzi, Michele Macrì (Sapienza University of Rome), Alberto Scarani (Magilabs), Franca Caucia (University of Pavia), and other prominent European experts.

Internships, hosted by qualified institutions such as IGR, will allow students to translate theory into practical experience.

For our magazine — always committed to promoting gemological culture — this represents an opportunity to contribute directly, as media partner, to a project that fills a historical gap and opens a new perspective based on scientific rigor, ethics, and inclusion.
